Scholarship consideration is open to non-residents of North Carolina who are making application to Western Carolina University as entering undergraduate freshmen or transfer students and who plan to major in a teacher certification field of study. Awards will be based upon academic achievement and teaching potential. The priority filing date for submission of all required documentation is February 1. Recipients will receive written notification and be given 30 days to accept or decline the award, at which time alternates will be reconsidered.
Instructions
The steps to be considered for the North Carolina Teacher Incentive Program include:
1. Complete the application process for admission to Western Carolina University. Go to our online application for admission or “request more info” to receive an application in the mail. Be sure to submit the $40 application fee, official high school and/or college transcripts, and standardized test scores (SAT or ACT scores).
2. Submit the NC TIP application (PDF).
3. Submit an essay, not to exceed two typed pages, that describes your desire to enter the teaching profession and the strengths you feel you would bring to the classroom. Be sure to include your full name on your essay so that our office can match it to your application file.
4. Submit three letters of recommendation from teachers or school administrators who can provide specific insights into your attributes and your desire to become a teacher. Be sure that your references provide your full name on your letters of recommendation so that we can match them with your file. Submit all of the requested material prior to February 1, to:
